Gustavo Gimeno has two records ready for release (Pentatone). A bang like that suits Gimeno very well, who, before turning to conducting, crowned his musical career thus far with the position of principal percussionist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (…) About as swiftly Gustavo Gimeno and his Luxemburger musicians settle into the almost laid-back, cool tone of early Shostakovich, who was still on his quest to find modernity. The Allegro whirls boisterously through the sections whilst the clarinet shows off taking the lead before passing it to the piano. This is all densely intertwined by Maestro Gimeno, who is always watching out to create a solid, yet delicately transparent sound.
