On May 25, Gustavo Gimeno and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg released their latest composer portrait on Pentatone featuring five pieces by Spanish composer Francisco Coll. Soloist is violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
Gustavo Gimeno has long had close artistic ties with Francisco Coll and regularly provides a stage for his highly expressive compositions. The centrepiece of the album is the Violin Concerto, which Coll wrote as “a portrait of Kopatchinskaja” after meeting her and Gimeno in Valencia in 2016. “Like every portrait, it includes traces of its creator alongside unique and personal reflections on its subject”, says Coll about his composition. In addition to the Violin Concerto, four other works will be heard on the album: Hidd’n Blue op. 6, Mural, Four Iberian Miniatures and Aqua Cinerea op. 1. With these five works, composed between 2005 and 2019, the album traces Coll’s musical development and fully showcases his contemporary sound worlds in which he creatively uses traditional forms and influences.
