The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has announced Gustavo as its 11th Music Director, starting his tenure with the 2020/21 season. He made his debut with the orchestra presenting works by Beethoven, Ligeti and Dvořák in February 2018 and will succeed Peter Oundjian, who led the TSO for 14 fruitful years. “I am so proud to become the Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra,” says Gustavo about the new position. “From our very first encounter I connected with the Orchestra’s sound, their cultivated playing and flexibility, and immediately felt at home, both musically and personally.” Catherine Beck, the orchestra’s Chair of the Board of Directors, is just as excited: “We at the TSO were searching for a leader who would take our highly talented musicians to the next level and, in Gustavo Gimeno, we have found exactly that person. (…) He will lead the orchestra with passion and imagination, bring the TSO to where Torontonians live, and stir this city’s appreciation of great music.” Gustavo will next return to Toronto for concerts on June 29 and 30, 2019.
