With the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Gustavo Gimeno starts his tenure as Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. After the orchestra had to cancel their originally planned season, Gimeno is developing programs in collaboration with the musicians of the TSO that are reflective of the current environment to “ignite a passion for extraordinary music in more intimate settings and to connect with our patrons in unique ways.” Redesigned concerts and programs will take place in communities across Toronto, including at Roy Thomson Hall, for audience and ensemble sizes that align with current health regulations. Online offerings are also being planned. Exact timings will follow.
Gimeno made his debut with the orchestra presenting works by Beethoven, Ligeti and Dvořák in February 2018 and will succeed Peter Oundjian, who led the TSO for 14 fruitful years. “I feel incredibly honoured and happy to be Music Director of the wonderful musicians of the TSO. Even though I had imagined a different start, I feel excited and so lucky to have the musicians and the staff of the TSO as my colleagues.” says Gimeno.
