This November, Gustavo Gimeno makes his debut appearance with the Staatskapelle Berlin, presenting an extraordinary program centred around percussion. Starting off the evening are two compositions from 2012 by Peter Eötvös and by Tan Dun – as different in their compositional ideas as they are in their aesthetic handwriting –, with renowned percussionist Martin Grubinger as soloist. The second half of the program is marked by two 20th century pieces by Russian composers: Sofia Gubaidulina’s exuberant „Fairytale Poem“, written originally for a children’s radio program based on the fairy tale The Little Piece of Chalk by the Czech writer Mazourek; and Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Symphony, written at just 18 years as his graduation project before taking the international music world by storm the following year. The concerts will take place on November 7 and 8 at Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin.
